Staying Healthy: Keeping Your High Blood Pressure In-Check Image

High blood pressure causes your heart to work harder to pump blood through your body. This extra work can weaken your heart muscle. High blood pressure can also damage the blood vessels that carry blood from your heart to the body. Here are just some of the things you can do to help keep your high blood pressure in check:

• Take your blood pressure medication as prescribed. Do not stop taking any medication without talking to your doctor.

• Maintain a healthy weight.

• Eat foods low in sodium. Make sure the family cook knows that you need to eat a low-sodium diet.

• Get at least 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity on most days.

• Eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and choose low- fat dairy foods.
